There's a lot of information out there about tattoo removal, and not all of it is right. Some myths scare people off. Others set expectations that no clinic can meet. Here are the ones we hear most, with honest answers, including the parts that are partly true.

Myth: "Tattoos can't be fully removed"

The honest answer: many can, but not every one. Lots of tattoos can be faded until they're no longer noticeable. Some leave a faint shadow ("ghosting") or a slight change in skin texture or tone, and some inks are more stubborn than others. Ink colour, depth, age, placement and how your body heals all play a part. That's why we look at your tattoo in person and give you an honest picture before you start, not a promise.

Myth: "Laser removal always leaves scars"

Not true, but care matters. When the laser is set correctly for your skin and you follow your aftercare, scarring is uncommon. The things that raise the risk are overly aggressive treatment, picking at blisters or scabs, and not letting your skin heal fully between sessions. That's why we tune the laser to your skin, start with a test spot, and only book your next session when your skin is ready.

Myth: "Colour tattoos can't be removed"

Mostly outdated. Older lasers struggled with some colours. Our Cutera Enlighten III has three wavelengths that cover a wide range of colours, including black, stubborn reds and oranges, and greens and purples. Some colours, like very light, white or skin-toned inks, are still tricky, which is one more reason we always start with a test spot.

Myth: "Laser doesn't work on darker skin"

Not true. It works on all skin tones when the settings are matched to your skin. We tune the laser to you and start with a test spot, so you can see how your skin responds before we treat the whole tattoo. Read more about laser tattoo removal on darker skin.

Myth: "It hurts way more than getting the tattoo"

It's different, and much faster. Most people describe it as quick snaps rather than the long drag of a tattoo needle. Sessions take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending on size. We numb first, cool the skin throughout, and give you breaks whenever you need them. You set the pace.

Myth: "One session and it's gone"

Usually not. Your body clears the ink over weeks after each session, so removal happens gradually, with healing time in between. Once in a while a tattoo fades remarkably fast, but that's the exception, not something anyone can promise. Be cautious of anyone who guarantees a number of sessions before seeing your tattoo.

Myth: "Removal creams and at-home tricks work"

We don't recommend them. Tattoo ink sits deep in the skin, under the surface layer that creams can reach. At-home methods that try to get at it, like acids or scrubbing, can damage your skin and make professional removal harder later.

Myth: "If I start, I have to remove the whole thing"

Not at all. You can fade a tattoo just enough for a cover-up, or treat only part of a design. See tattoo fading vs. full removal.

Myth: "Cosmetic tattoos are easier because they're lighter"

Often the opposite. Brows, lip blush and other cosmetic tattoos are frequently done in light, warm or skin-toned shades that can react unpredictably to a laser. That's why we always start cosmetic pigments with a test spot. See our cosmetic tattoo removal page.
