If you have darker skin, you may have heard that laser tattoo removal isn't for you, or that it's risky. Maybe a clinic turned you away, or you're just nervous. Here's the honest answer: laser tattoo removal can be done safely on darker skin. It just has to be done with the right laser, the right settings and a little more patience.
Why skin tone matters
The laser works by sending light into your skin that tattoo ink absorbs. Melanin, the natural pigment in your skin, can absorb some of that light too. The more melanin in your skin, the more carefully the laser needs to be set, so it breaks up the ink while being gentle on your skin's own colour.
When that balance is off, darker skin can be more prone to:
- Lighter patches (hypopigmentation)
- Darker patches (hyperpigmentation)
- Texture changes if skin is treated too aggressively or doesn't heal fully between sessions
That sounds scary, but it's exactly what careful settings, a test spot and enough healing time are designed to prevent.
How we treat darker skin
The right laser
Our Cutera Enlighten III has three wavelengths, including a longer wavelength that passes through skin pigment more gently, which makes it well suited to darker skin.
Settings tuned to you
We never treat on autopilot. We adjust the settings to your skin tone, your ink and how your skin responds, and we change them as your tattoo fades.
Test spot first, always
Before we treat the whole tattoo, we treat a small test spot and check how your skin responds. You see the results before you commit to anything.
Comfort and cooling
We numb first, cool the skin throughout, and give you breaks whenever you need them. You set the pace. Cooling also helps protect your skin during treatment.
Patience between sessions
We only book your next session when your skin is fully ready. With darker skin, giving it that extra time is one of the best ways to protect your natural tone.
What about colourful tattoos?
Black ink is usually the most straightforward on any skin tone. Some colours, like reds, oranges, greens and purples, need wavelengths that skin pigment can absorb more easily, so on darker skin we're especially careful with them and may take a more gradual approach. We'll look at your colours at your free consult and tell you honestly what to expect.
Looking after your skin between sessions
- Protect it from the sun. Sun on healing skin can trigger dark patches, so keep the area covered or protected.
- Don't pick. Let any blisters or scabs heal on their own.
- Follow your aftercare. Before you leave, we'll walk you through it, and we're a message away if anything worries you.
Cosmetic tattoos on darker skin
Microblading, lip blush and other cosmetic tattoos are often done in warm or skin-toned shades that need extra care on any skin, and especially on darker skin. That's why we always start cosmetic pigments with a test spot. See our cosmetic tattoo removal page.
How many sessions will I need?
We don't give a set number of sessions, because every tattoo is different. Pigment, depth, age, placement, your goal and how your body heals all play a part. At your free consult we'll look at it together and give you an honest estimate. With darker skin, we may go a little more gradually, because protecting your skin matters more than rushing.
